overview

Bardia, a remote area of South West Nepal close to the Indian border, is dominated by Nepal’s largest National park. Home to a healthy population of tigers, rhinos, leopards, bears, much of Bardia is straight out of Kipling’s Jungle book. As seen on Asia with David Attenborough, episode 4

We are working with 2 large schools in the region, Jagadamba School and Shiva Sundar School, both of which are run well by staff teams who have reacted favourably to our involvement. They agree that their wider communities should be involved. Most of the pupils are from either Tharu and Dalit ethnic groups, both marginalised due to ethnicity and caste. As with so many of Nepal's remote communities, attitudes and customs are very traditional, and most of the local population are subsistence farmers.

Work To Date

Sarah and Sera first visited the schools in November 2023. Attendance, especially of girls, beyond early teens was low, and neither school had any IT infrastructure or internet access. Despite these issues, we were impressed with the attitudes of the teachers and their desire to improve the education that they could provide to their students.

In February 2024, we accompanied Days 4 Girls as they ran a busy 2 day programme of Womens’ Health training courses to a packed audience of girls and boys across both schools together with teachers and some of the parents from the wider communities.

In March 2024, Sera revisited the schools with Ashok from Edutech. Ashok ran a formal review with the school and completed inspection reports. On the back of this, a formal MOU was signed in June between YYY Foundation, both schools and Edutech. Both schools were happy to refurbish rooms for the computer suites and to provide required furniture to Edutech specifications.

Although work on the new computer rooms was delayed by flooding in the area in the Autumn, we received photographs of the completed computer rooms at both schools in early December.

Working with the 2 Bardia schools has gone well for the charity and our partners, and within a fairly short timeframe we have managed to make a huge difference to the schools and their students. Attendance of girls beyond the onset of menstruation should improve significantly. IT facilities and skills will provide new opportunities for the young people in the area, bringing in much needed wealth and improving retention of those young people in the region.

There are other schools in the area which we have under consideration, and we fully expect, once sufficient funds have been raised, to repeat our success with more schools in this remote region over the next 2 years.
